Projects and Devices

I have designed and built a number of electronic devices through many projects over the years. Here are some examples of what has been done in this field. Some of this is also discussed in my article about my Amateur Radio Life - interests which you can read about here.

Close up of the Disco Mixer Console developed for use during my Disco days around 1975-1985. Still have a number of 7" single records!

Mono mixer installed in the "Ethyl Swinburne" student building - 1970.

The disco mixer was set up to power a set of large loudspeakers in a split system. The sound used an "active crossover" which fed the low frequencies [under 400Hz] to the large 'bin' folded W bass unit and the higher frequencies [400Hz - 5000Hz] to the mid range speaker. A passive unit fed the higher frequencies to a 'Kaltro' horn tweeter, from 5000Hz up. 4 x 50W amplifiers were installed [2 for each stereo channel] which made a total of 200W RMS available for the speaker system. A really high end system for the time and it sounded great in the ropom where the equipment was set up at the 'Lakeside Disco' at Albert Park. Some may remember the 'Powerhouse Daces of the 1960's which were a go to event for teens at the time. The mono mixer at Swinburne Institute [as it was known then] was mainly used as a PA system but was pressed in to service during the annual Art School Reveue which I was given the role of lighting design and sound for the productions. There were a number of revues I was involved in at this time between 1970-1975.

Original 4 track quadraphonic mixer designed and built by myself. It was used for a number of years before the studio was upgraded to an 8 channel system with a new mixer.
The Tascam M15 mixer which took over from the one on the left. From left to right, Tascam 8 track reel to reel [1/2" tape]. Tascam 24channel in, 8 channel out mixer. DBX compressor limiters, Revox 2 track and Sony 4 track tape recorders.
